Government announced public holiday on Iqbal day

The federal government announced that a public holiday will be observed on November 9 (Saturday) for Iqbal Day, marking the 147th birth anniversary of Allama Iqbal. Known as the “Poet of the East,” Iqbal inspired millions of Muslims in the subcontinent to seek independence from British rule and establish their own homeland. Born in Sialkot in 1877, he is celebrated for his poetry and philosophical contributions, which played a significant role in advocating for a separate Muslim state.

Iqbal’s Allahabad address in 1930 was pivotal in shaping the political landscape leading up to Pakistan’s creation, offering a clear vision for a distinct Muslim identity. Iqbal Day is observed with special prayers in mosques, a Change of Guards ceremony at his mausoleum in Lahore, and various events nationwide to honor the national poet.

Additionally, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has confirmed that all banks will be closed on Iqbal Day.
