CPEC Helps Alleviate Power Shortage in Pakistan: Energy Ministry
The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) energy projects have begun to alleviate Pakistan’s power shortage, the Ministry of Energy announced on Thursday afternoon.
In a detailed statement, the ministry revealed that between 2013 and 2018, approximately 11,650 MW of electricity was added to the national grid.
The ministry further noted that around 3,000 MW of clean energy was introduced during this period, including 1,350 MW of hydropower and 1,400 MW from wind and solar sources.
For the first time, work commenced on local Thar Coal-based projects, which were initiated under CPEC. The ministry highlighted that a 660 MW Thar Coal power project has already started supplying affordable electricity. Additionally, the 884 MW Sukki Kinari hydropower project, which began construction in 2018, is expected to start generating electricity by 2024.
Similarly, the 720 MW Karot hydropower project, launched in 2017, is scheduled to begin supplying power to the national grid this July, the ministry emphasized.
